Kannur, July 5 (PTI): In a display of human kindness for a cause of grave concern, Rs 18 crore was raised in Kerala through crowdfunding in seven days for an 18 month old child suffering from a rare genetic condition called spinal muscle atrophy. Mohammed, son of PK Rafeeq and Mariyumma, needs a dose of Zolgensma, which is considered one of the most expensive drugs in the world. The processing committee informed the public on Monday that more than Rs 18 crore had reached bank accounts opened for donations and asked people to stop depositing. “We got over Rs 18 crore in the bank account. People got together and collected this amount for our little boy,” Mattul panchayat president Farisha told reporters. The treatment committee, headed by MP Mr. Vijin, launched a public appeal a week ago to fund Mohammed’s treatment. The campaign was picked up by social media, increasing the amount in seven days across the world. Incidentally, 15-year-old Afra, Mohammed’s older sister, was also affected by the same illness and is in a wheelchair.

The drug will have to be purchased overseas, and the treatment committee has asked the state government to initiate the purchasing process.

Medical experts suggest that the child should be given the dose of the drug before he turns two years old.
