INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A man in his mid-20s was stable after being shot dead in the Castleton Square shopping center on Friday night, police said.
Emergency medics were the first to call at around 7:25 p.m. Friday for a dangerous shooting scene at the mall, 6020 E. 82nd St.
About 3 minutes later, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a report of a shot on his way to Community North Hospital, located near the mall at 7150 Clearvista Drive. The IMPD later determined that the victim at the hospital was linked to the shooting inside the mall.
IMPD Officer Genae Cook said in a press briefing that the shooting took place inside the mall near the south entrance. A plan of the shopping center shows that stores near this entrance include clothing stores Forever 21, H&M, and Express; Sally’s beauty products; and footwear retailers Foot Locker and Skechers.
Cook also said the victim’s injuries were not life threatening. The shooting was not meant to be random. No suspect is in custody. As of Friday night, the police were still trying to figure out what had led to the shooting.
Law enforcement officers from the IMPD and Marion County Sheriff’s Office who were off duty and working at the mall went from store to store after the shooting to secure the area and escort people safely. The mall was closed after the shooting.
Simon Property Group operates the shopping center. News 8 asked Simon via email if the company had a statement; he referred all requests to the IMPD.
The shoot was one of five over five hours in Indianapolis Friday afternoon and evening. Two people died in other shootings.
