While many TV shows have made household names of their star actors, showrunners have occasionally been able to bring together some of Hollywood’s biggest names for a surprising appearance in a full episode or single scene.
Perhaps one of the more polarizing cameos belonged to Ed sheeran on HBO Game of thrones in July 2017. The singer appeared in a brief scene at the Season 7 premiere, titled “Dragonstone”. In the episode, the “Bad Habits” singer plays a Lannister soldier seated next to a campfire as Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) passed on horseback. He sang a little tune to his classmates and Arya replied, “It’s a lovely song. I’ve never heard it before.
While some fans were thrilled to see the “Thinking out Loud” crooner appear in Westeros, others were genuinely annoyed. Twitter users commented on everything from “Ed Sheeran is really looking for that castle on the hill, huh,” to “I don’t even watch Game of Thrones but still made Ed Sheeran ruin it” and “It’s a show with dragons and I keep going. I can’t believe Ed Sheeran is currently on screen.
The creators of the HBO show David Benioff and DB Weiss had previously announced his appearance on South by Southwest in March. “We knew Maisie was a huge fan of Ed Sheeran and for years we tried to get him on the show so we could surprise Maisie,” Benioff said at the time. “This year, we finally made it.”
After criticizing his brief role, Sheeran said MTV News this September that he agreed that it was a unique performance. “Nobody wants to see me come back,” he said. “I wanted to be a cameo in it, and I did the cameo. I’m cool with it, though. I liked that.”
Another unforgettable cameo belonged to Taylor Swift when she made an appearance on a stage in the season 2 finale of New girl in May 2013. While Cece (Hannah simone) was to marry Shivrang (Satya bhabha) in the episode, the duo were both cold-eyed about their upcoming nuptials.
As Shivrang called off the nuptials in the middle of the ceremony, he remarked that he was in love with his ex-girlfriend Elaine, who rose from her seat at the time. There, Elaine was revealed to be the singer of “Cardigan” in a scene that apparently reproduced her track “Speak Now” from her third studio album..
“She is awesome,” Zooey deschanel said previously Us weekly during an episode screening and panel in April. “She’s super funny and really smart. Very professional and we loved working with her.
More recently, the model Gigi hadid made a voiceover appearance on Netflix I have never during the Season 2 premiere in July 2021. During the third episode, Hadid plays out and tells the Paxton Hall-Yoshida inner monologue (Darren barnet). She took over the role after Chrissy teigen abandoned amid bullying controversy involving Courtney stodden.
“You might be wondering why Gig-ers is taking time despite his busy schedule to tell the story of a 16-year-old boy,” the model said at the start of the episode. “Believe it or not, I identify with this kid. We’re both constantly underestimated because people only see us as sex symbols.
Hadid shared a trailer for her voiceover role via Instagram back then with the caption, “I had the BEST time to narrate a new episode of @I have never – I protect you, Pax! Barnet commented: “Thank you very much Gigi! you killed him! 🙌. “Show creator Mindy Kaling also replied, “I passed out” and “You did such a good job!” We loved having you! ❤️❤️❤️🙌🏾. “
