A unique way to transmit through kindness

LAINGSBURG, MI – Something unique is happening in downtown Laingsburg, and residents are talking about it. It spreads throughout the community and is centered around what good neighbors are when it comes to kindness.

Laingsburg is a small town in Shiawassee County. People here smile and greet each other, and you see it from the main corners to the farmer’s market.

It is therefore not surprising that a movement is taking place here involving locals who wish to help people facing food insecurity and, at the same time, help support local businesses.

It’s called Money 4 Meals, and it started in Laingsburg after a few residents saw a post on social media about a similar program in Texas.

Many of these donation boxes are set up in participating stores for community members to contribute to Money 4 Meals.

“We participate in a program called Money 4 Meals. You have two options. You can either use our service if you need any products. Like, we have sunflower seeds or bread, cookies or eggs. All we need is a simple initial and you can have the products. We keep track of this. The other option is to donate in a box so that we can provide food for other people. “

Food insecure individuals and families in the Laingsburg area can stop by one of the many participating restaurants to receive a free meal, drink or snack. All they have to do is apply to participate in the Money 4 Meal program or request a Money 4 Meal card to use elsewhere.

Firefly Ridge Farms also helps by distributing eggs and fresh produce.

“There was someone who came to church one day and gave us a check for $ 1,000 to get us started so that we could start both the meal part and the fundraiser part in. same time.”

“It’s kind of a win-win for restaurants too because it attracts people into their business who buy things. And they don’t have to shell out money for those free meals. Everything is funded by donations from community members.

Greg Hunt and Chris Phillips say they will be using 4 Money and will also donate to the program when they can.

“I think it helps low income families and we are the weakest. I also like the pay-it-forward. I think this aspect, for me, shows the humanity of all of us.

“We have church volunteers who come to businesses once a week to pick up the donation boxes, then to bring back their forms if they need them and to bring them checks if they need more. ‘silver.”

And for people in need to have access to food when they might not otherwise be able to.

Wendy Kribs is the owner of Dairy Den, one of the participating businesses.

“It’s been a tough year for a lot of people. And one of the reasons you can see it’s so tough is financially, but that doesn’t change the fact that we all deserve a treat. So whether it’s a pizza at PDT, a coffee at Ayven Grace, or an ice cream cone here, it doesn’t change people’s desire to enjoy things. And what an opportunity we have as local business owners to be able to do that. “
