Google not only lets you start Meet sessions from Android, iOS, or Chrome on the web, but also lets you access Meet from other apps.
Google Meet started out as a video conferencing solution for people in organizations that use G Suite. Then, at the end of April 2020, Google announced that Meet would soon be available for free to anyone with an email address and internet access. The change makes Google’s modern scalable, stable and secure meeting app accessible to everyone.
But Google has also woven Meet connections into other apps, such as Gmail, Google Chat, and Google Classroom. These interconnects provide users of Google’s tools with a wide range of collaboration options. Users can select the tool that best helps them complete a task, then switch typed text to Google Meet when warranted, with all the excitement video can convey.
The many paths to Google Meet, as detailed below, suggest that Meet video conferencing will remain an essential Google app for many years to come.
To note: If you’re using a corporate account, your G Suite administrator can manage or restrict some settings for the apps mentioned below. If you can’t access a feature, contact your G Suite administrator.

How to video conference now with Google Meet
In Chrome on a computer, go to meet.google.com, sign in (if necessary), and select + Join or start a meeting. Or, on mobile devices, install the Meet app on Android or ios. When you want to meet, open the app, tap + New meeting to start a session. You can then share the meeting information with the people you want to join.
How to access Google Meet through Google Calendar
When you create a new event with Google Calendar on the web and in the Calendar apps on Android or iOS, you can also add a video meeting with Google Meet.
In Chrome on a computer, go to calendar.google.com, log in, and select + Create to create a new event. Choose Add Google Meet video conference, then add all other event details, or select More options, then fill in the details and select Save. In Google Calendar apps on mobile devices, tap the + button, tap Event, then tap Add video meeting, add event details, and then tap Save.
How to access Google Meet through Gmail
Sometimes it makes more sense to talk than to continue an extended email exchange. Fortunately, Gmail (in a web browser) includes access to Meet as part of the chat. To activate the chat, open mail.google.com in Chrome, select the gear (upper right area), choose Settings, then Chat and choose Chat on, then Save. The options Start a meeting or Join a meeting will appear with your chat window.
How to access Google Meet through Google Classroom
A teacher, or anyone who has created a class with Google Classroom, can create a unique Google Meet link that can be used multiple times for the class. The link will only work for students when the Classroom teacher is in an active Meet session. Once activated, the teacher can also choose to make the Meet link visible to students. If enabled, the link will appear in two places:
- In the Homework and Homework tab, to the left of the links for the Google Calendar and Class Drive folders, and
- In the Feeds tab, near the class name and class code, at the top of the page.
AT activate Meet links in Google Classroom, the teacher must select the gear (top right), select the Generate a meeting link button, then choose Save. If necessary, the teacher can also reset the link.
How to access Google Meet through Google Chat
In Google Chat (formerly Hangouts Chat), you can add a video conference, which allows everyone in a room to access the Meet link. Of Chat on the web, choose a person or a room (in the left area). Then choose + New thread or select an existing thread and click or tap the Google Meet icon to add a video conference. Select the Send icon (the triangle that points to the right) to share your message via Chat.
How to access Google Meet through Google Slides
The Google Slides mobile apps on Android and iOS let you present slides directly to any active Google Meet session. You must first know an active meeting ID. Once you’ve done that, start Slides on your device, open the set you want to present, then tap the Present icon (the triangle pointing right), then Present at a new or existing meeting. Paste or type the meeting ID. Typically, you use this feature when you already have an active Meet connection on another device.
How to access Google Meet through your Jamboard device
Finally, if you have the Google Jamboard device, you may have it join Google Meet sessions, too much. However, a G Suite administrator will need to configure and enable this feature first. A shared Jamboard during a session gives your team the opportunity to draw and chat together.
To note: Even if you don’t have access to Jamboard hardware, you can use the Show in Meet option to share an open Chrome tab on the Jamboard app on the web.
Just as Gmail set the tone for email in the late 2000s, Google has the potential to advance video as a powerful collaboration tool, which works with all kinds of other apps, in the 2020s.
